When installing directly into a stud, drill 1/8" pilot holes for the screws. The wall anchors, which are designed for 1/2" drywall, are to be installed into a 3/8" hole.

Question

Alternative to Supplied Anchors

Is there something different that can be used after installing the supplied anchors to make the installation more solid? Three of the five I installed would not tighten. Only way to get them out damages the wall. I used that black pin after putting them in but there is no explanation what it does or how to use it so I gave it two light taps with a hammer each time. Wish I had ignored the instructions and used something different for drywall anchors because I can definitely believe these will pull loose under any kind of load.

The black pin still makes no sense since squeezing the sides to get it through the hole make it open further than that black pin ever could. My drywall is 1/2" and I used a 3/8" drill bit. Read the instructions several times. Two of my anchors held and the screw tightened, the other three just spin. My fault for following directions. When the first one did not hold properly I should have switched to something else.

answer 2
We currently offer only one type of anchor for installation, which are designed for 1/2" drywall. The pre-drilled hole for the anchor should be 3/8" and the black push pin is used to open the wall anchor once it has been installed into the drywall.

These anchors are some of the most difficult to use that I have encountered, having been an avid do-it-yourselfer for more than 30 years. If you have not installed yet, I recommend another trip to the hardware store. You will need to know that (a) you are going through drywall and (b) the thickness of the drywall (most are 1/2" but may be thinner or thicker). If the wall is of different construction you will need to describe it for them. This is your best bet because Rubbermaid cannot advise you through written instructions as well as a live experienced professional and cannot supply every kind of wall anchor in the box. You best believe this is what I will be doing for the next one.

The drywall anchor should be bent so that the tips of the wings meet to form a point. (Note - the anchor cannot be pulled flat).

Question

What is the function of the anchor push pin?

I called the toll free number and asked this question of the lady. She said it was to expand the anchor but the push pin does not reach the bottom of the anchor due to the serrations on the upper half of the pin?

I found that the push pin is quite useless. when you push it in the push pin does not do much once it gets past the dry wall... but I too have no idea who designed these worthless things.... 1/2" dry wall is even too thick for them to work effectively... they still pull out very easily.

answer 2
The function of the anchor pin is to engage the anchor. After placing your anchor into your drywall you place the anchor key into the anchor to engage the wings behind the wall.
