Do you have a brace that can be used above the tight mesh shelving?

I have a need for a shelf above a chest and the brackets will be in the way if underneath the shelf.

I have wood paneling. Should I use screws to mount my shelf to wall studs?

I have a shelf with the direct mount hardware. It looks like this should be used with drywall. I need to mount to the studs as I have wood paneling. Should I just use screws in lieu of the nail?
