Question

Water Coolers -- Can hot liquids go in them?

Is there a maximum temperature for the liquid that goes into the water cooler? For example, if I put hot tea or a liquid at 170F, will this cause a problem (either health for me or damage the cooler)?

Our water coolers are designed for keeping liquids cold. Cold air falls, therefore the coolers have heavy insulation in the bottom of the cooler to keep the coolness inside the container.
Warm air rises and would easily escape from the containers as they lack heavy insulation towards the top.

Our water coolers will keep liquids warm for a limited period of time, depending on the outside temperature and the temperature of the liquid placed inside. We do not recommend putting extremely hot liquids in the container as it may warp the liner.

Question

How do you clean a water jug, and how often?

The water jug is used daily for drinking water. For better or worse, each day the cooler is filled with fresh ice, and then filled with fresh water. At the end of the day, any left over water may be dumped out, but generally just left for the next day.

Is there a cleaning procedure?

You can wash the cooler with ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda sprinkled on a clean damp sponge. For even tougher odors, just soak items in a solution of 4 tablespoons ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda solution in 1 quart warm water.

We would also recommend fresh water on a daily basis.

Question

where are your coolers made?

regarding tim's quesion about hot liquids, specifically 170 degree liquids, both your and gotts coolers are popular for making beer, in the rapidly growing hobby of craft homebrewing. it is essential to keep the mash at about 140-155 degrees for about an hour. the mash is then rinsed (sparged) with 170 degree water.

i'm currently looking to replace my 5 gal cooler with a ten gallon model. i have a choice between yours, gotts, and an unnamed model made in india.

thankyou for your time

In the unlikely event an odor occurs, rinsing in a solution of baking soda and water will restore freshness. When storing the cooler, it is suggested to make sure that the item is completely dry to avoid moisture or mildew build up.

Question

Can I use a Rubbermaid cooler as a Mash Tun?

Rubbermaid 10 gal beverage coolers are the standard mash tun for most "home brewers". Home brewers have been using your coolers for years because Rubbermaid coolers do a great job of keeping the mash hot. The coolers are used at temperatures between 140F and 170F. At these temps there is no visible damage. But, I need to know if the plastic is safe and stable at 170F? Is there a temperature where the plastic becomes unstable? Are there any conditions where the cooler is no longer safe to use for beverages?

Thanks from all the Home Brewers

Question

I need to know if the interior liner of your 10 gal water cooler is made of HDPE plastic.

Coolers like this are commonly used as mash tuns by home brewers. It is important to know what the liner is made of. HDPE has a high operating tempature so leaching of plastic chemicals is not a concern.
